Betty is a beautiful girl, most deserving of a wonderful forever home! As with many rescues, Betty has a ‘story’, and perhaps a not-so-happy one to tell. When she came to AWCR in December of last year, she was a scared, shut-down and pitiful sight to see. Betty came scared of EVERYTHING. Literally, everything! Upon meeting her first wonderful foster family for Christmas in 2010, Betty escaped their house due to her fear of people and tendency to bolt away. She spent the next several days, with countless volunteers searching for her, in the coldest days of winter and the snow storm of early 2011. Betty was located by a good Samaritan on January 13th and returned to the AWCR where she met her new foster family and Animal Behaviorist who would help to ease Betty’s fears and acclimate her to the activities of daily life.
Betty adopted a corner in the mud room of her new foster families’ house and remained there, scared of her own shadow and nearly everything else she encountered, for several months, even while undergoing extensive training to ease her fears and anxiety. However, we could not give up on Betty! She is the sweetest soul one could hope to meet. Despite her past and her extreme anxiety, she wanted to live. You could tell by the spark that came back to her eyes after several months of being allowed to live in freedom; free from the crate that confined her for the first 6 years of her life. After extensive therapy, we are proud to say that Betty has made great strides in her recovery. She will now eat and drink in front of us (this was HUGE!) and take treats and toys from people. When she hears the treats, she now comes running! She has even been caught, on occasion, chasing a ball with the other pups in the back yard! She also ENJOYS playing with the other pups as well.
Betty is a very calm dog and will most likely never be the ‘outgoing’ type. Betty would be perfectly fine to live on your couch for the remainder of her life, with lots of love and occasional petting from you! Betty does not possess an aggressive bone in her body. She, although still fearful, allows our children near her, our cats and any other dog she meets. She LOVES dogs and would thus most likely do better in a home with a friendly pup to help her further overcome her fears and romp in the back yard with. She is potty trained and requires a house with a fenced yard.
Her rehabilitation is an ongoing process as she is by no means ‘cured’ of her fears. Even after daily training thus far, the process to ‘undo’ the fear that built inside her for the first 6 years of her life may last for several years, even perhaps, for the rest of her life. She needs a patient, understanding owner, aware of her past and committed to her future, with the knowledge that a relationship with Betty will take time to build. You must be willing to put time and effort into furthering her rehabilitation until the remnants of her fearful past are no longer present. I can assure you, she is worth it! She is 110% deserving!
